A Legacy goes a long way

When Harold Liebner died in 2003 he had explicitly left money to three Israeli based charities who through his generosity would benefit thousands of Israeli lives.

In the mid 1980s Harold had already made a decision to remember Magen David Adom in his will. He told his accountant of his intentions. Nearly twenty years later, as Harold entered the final week of a terminal illness, he called his accountant to his bedside. He wanted to write a will and leave a sum of money to Magen David Adom UK to purchase an ambulance but was persuaded that his legacy would provide a longer lasting memorial by naming a room in a station instead. An idea that Harold gladly agreed to. Whilst Magen David Adom UK received by far the largest part of his Estate, two other Israel based charities also benefitted from his generosity.

Harold died four days later. He never knew his full worth and would have been staggered to find out that his Estate was valued at nearly £1million. Harold had agreed that any excess money over the specific monetary legacies should be split proportionately between the various charities he had chosen to support. As a result, Magen David Adom did not receive ‘just’ one room. Instead, Harold Liebner’s legacy was enough to build an entire station.

In October this year Magen David Adom UK was proud to dedicate the Harold Liebner MDA Station in Nesher. The station currently serves over 30,000 people taking in the Haifa Bay area, the whole Carmel Region as well as the massive industrial area nearby. Harold Liebner had not previously been a supporter of Magen David Adom UK and had never visited Israel. Yet he will make a huge difference to all the people of Israel for many years to come.
